This unique spelunking adventure is located about an hour north of the town of La Fortuna. It is definitely worth the visit if you’re interested in exploring an ancient cave network with unique rock formations and subterranean wildlife near the famous Arenal Volcano.

The Venado Caves were formed over 15-20 million years ago and consist of a wide underground network of chambers, tunnels, stalactites and stalagmites. The tour lasts about 2 hours and will take you through the caves to visit the unique geological formations and underground ecosystems.

This experience requires a basic level of fitness and is not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to be up close and personal with bats and other crazy critters, to wade ankle or knee deep in water, and to crawl through tight tunnels. If you are at all claustrophobic or wary of bugs, this might not be for you. If you have a spirit of adventure and looking for a thrilling educational experience, then it is worth the visit!

They will provide rubber boots and helmets, but make sure you bring high socks and an extra pair of clothes for after the tour. If you want to take photos or bring any personal belongings, then make sure you have a waterproof case.
