Lomas de Barbudal Biological Reserve

Lomas de Barbudal Biological Reserve

This is a beautiful hidden gem located just about 30 minutes south of Liberia off of route 1. The reserve consists of about 2,500 ha of protected dry forest, and is home to many insects, birds, and mammals. It is a great spot to stop by for a few hours to get away from the crowds and enjoy a nice easy hike through the dry forest.

Although the Guanacaste region is known for its dry weather, this is a nice oasis with access to a nice river, small natural pool, and beautiful waterfalls that flow even in the dry season. The reserve has three easy trails of about 6km in total, so you can take your time and search the treetops for wildlife such as the Scarlet Macaw and the White-faced Capuchin monkeys.

Although this area can have intense hot weather, here you will have plenty of opportunities to jump in the water and cool off during the hike. As this is a very lesser-known area, you are likely to have the entire place to yourself, so you can take your time and enjoy a relaxing walk through the tropical dry forest.

To access the reserve, you will take a 7km dirt road off from route 1 when heading south from Liberia. The end of the road is steep and best to travel by 4×4 in the rainy season. Make sure you bring plenty of water and bug spray, because the mosquitos are quite active especially in the rainy season.

Note:

This is a great park to stop by for a few hours for a nice easy hike between the Central Valley and the North Pacific Coast. Make sure you bring bug spray, because the mosquitos are quite active especially in the rainy season.
