Monteverde is famous for its impressive cloud forest ecosystem, which is an incredibly lush and vibrant forest environment abundant with plants and wildlife. The Santa Elena Cloud Forest, located about 20 minutes from the center of Santa Elena, offers a great way to be immersed in this unique ecosystem, with up to 12km of trails through the forest.

The reserve comes with 4 main trails through the cloud forest. The “Youth Challenge” trail is the shortest and is known for its 13-meter high observation tour above the trees, which allows for views of up to 4 volcanos and Lake Arenal. The “Encantado” trail is best for bird watching, whereas the “Del Bajo” trail is known for the best forest scenery. For more of a challenge, you can embark the “Caño Negro” trail, which is a 4.8 kilometer loop around the forest.

You can go hiking on your own, or organize a guided tour in advance. Their base price is $18 for adults and gives access to all of the hiking trails, the observation tower, and the orchid garden. Alternatively, for $35 you can reserve general tour with a naturalist guide with complimentary drink included, or for $150-175 you can organize a private or personalized tour.

The reserve is owned by the local Santa Elena high school, and all of the money raised from visitors entering the park goes towards protecting the reserve and aiding the local community. At the end of your hike, you can stop by the small gift shop and cafe to get a drink or snack.
