This is arguably one of the best hikes in Monteverde due to its combination of beautiful jungle trails, hanging bridges, and spectacular waterfall views. It’s definitely worth the visit if you’re looking for an intermediate hike near the town of Monteverde!
The trailhead is located about 30 minutes north of the Santa Elena town. They have a safe parking to leave the car, or you have the option to organize a shuttle pick-up in the Monteverde/Santa Elena area for $12 round-trip, which you can organize with them ahead of time via WhatsApp.
This hike is a total of 8km and runs deep into a valley to the beautiful “El Tigre” waterfall before making your way back up. You have the option to book a hiking tour only, which will give you free rein to explore all of the trails, 4 waterfalls, 10 hanging bridges, and freshwater pools at your own pace. You also have the option to book the full package tour, which includes the option to take a horseback ride or 4×4 safari car up the final uphill leg of the hike, and includes a delicious lunch at the end.
The way down into the valley is very doable by most fitness levels, however it can be quite steep and slippery at parts, so make sure you bring shoes with good traction. If you decide to hike on the way up then be ready for a difficult climb – take your time and go at your own pace. Don’t forget to pack plenty of water, and it’s recommended to bring a bathing suit or fast-drying clothes so you can swim in the natural pools and cool off.
