This magical National Park, located on the southern Caribbean Coast between the towns of Cahuita and Puerto Viejo, is home to over 1000 ha of protected land and 22,000 ha of protected ocean, making for a diverse tropical paradise that is home to many terrestrial and marine animals. It’s definitely worth the visit to explore the diverse wildlife and pristine, white-sand beaches of the region.

The park consists of a 8km, one-way trail that travels along the coast starting at Playa Blanca in Cahuita and ending in Puerto Vargas. You can begin your hike at either end of the trail; if you start from Playa Blanca they ask for a voluntary donation which will go towards maintaining the park, if you enter from Puerto Vargas then it is $5/person. Once you arrive at the end of the trail, you can take a bus or taxi back to where your vehicle is parked.

The trail is well maintained and adequate for travelers of all ages. The park is known for its abundant flora and fauna, and you’ll have the chance observe animals such as sloths, lizards, turtles, birds, snakes, raccoons, and monkeys, so it’s worth it to arrive in the morning and take your time exploring the trails to spot as much wildlife as possible. After exploring the forest, you can find your own private spot on the beach to relax on the pleasant white sand and enjoy the beautiful turquoise water.

This park includes more than 600 ha of protected coral reefs, where it’s possible to see over 100 species of fish such as the angelfish, and other marine animals such as manta rays, sea urchins, eels, and sea turtles. You can organize a snorkel tour which will take you out by boat to the reefs off of Punta Cahuita. Keep in mind that heavy rains can effect the turbidity of the water and snorkeling conditions – the best time of year to guarantee clear waters is September-October.
