This spectacular waterfall hike is about an hour’s drive inland from the Dominical beach on the Central Pacific coast. It is well worth the visit if you want to visit a fun and easy waterfall adventure while visiting coast, or looking for a fun place to stop on the way from the Pacific Coast towards the South/Central Mountains on route 243.
They have a secure area to park the car, then it is about a 700 meter steep downhill hike through a wooded path to reach the waterfall. You can take your time on the way down and enjoy the natural green landscapes before reaching the epic “Eco Chontales” waterfall and surrounding natural swimming pools. Definitely plan to bring quick-drying clothes, as you will want to dive in and enjoy the refreshing water of the river.
The hosts are extremely friendly and can prepare you a delicious typical meal right at the waterfall. They can also show you the spots where you can jump into the water – including a 6 meter drop for the more adventurous travelers! If you are interested, they also have access to a few small cabins and an area where you can set up a ground tent to stay the night.
To arrive, it is about 13 km off route 243 which heads from the Central Pacific coast into the mountains. About half-way along the route, you will run into a suspension bridge which might appear to be sketchy, but totally passable and safe. The last 3km are quite steep and can be unsafe during the rainy season if you don’t have a 4×4 vehicle. Make sure you pack properly and bring good shoes, bug spray/sunscreen, and light, quick drying clothes for the trip.
