Although there are many private hot spring resorts near the town of La Fortuna, you also have the option to visit “El Choyin”, which is a free natural hot spring river open to the public. The springs are located under a bridge about a 15 minute drive from La Fortuna as you head west on route 142, and are definitely worth the visit if you want to experience an authentic hot river spring.

Although you have the option to park right on the side of the road and walk down to the river, we recommend that you walk over when visiting the Volcan Arenal Ecological Park, which is located just 300 meters up the road. They have a large safe parking area right inside the entrance to the park where you can leave the car and walk to the springs, or if you walk over from the campsite it is about 800 meters along the road.

The river is at a pleasant heated temperature with several small pools to bathe in. The spot is completely surrounded by the trees, so you’ll feel immersed in nature with the chance to see wildlife such as iguanas and sloths as you enjoy the naturally heated waters.

Be aware that this can be quite the hot spot for tourists and locals, especially in the afternoons and weekends, but is a large enough area that you can walk along the river until you find more privacy for yourself. It’s recommended to bring sandals as the rocks can be quite slippery.
