Caño Island is located about 20km off the coast of Drake Bay on the Osa Peninsula, thus it is only accessible by boat tour. It’s one of the top 3 places in Costa Rica for snorkeling and diving due to the shallow reefs all around the island, which are full of wildlife such as turtles, small reef sharks, stingrays, and colorful reef fish.

You can either start the tour from the “Perla Del Sur” office in Sierpe, which begins with a boat tour through the mangroves, or you can start the tour directly from the Ganadito campsite. In this case, the tour guide will pick you up in his motorboat directly from the beach shore and head out to the reef surrounding the Caño Island. The boat ride is about 45 minutes, and once you arrive you’ll have the chance to do 2 snorkeling immersions led by local guides who know the perfect places to spot as much sea life as possible. A snack of fruits is provided in between the immersions.

On the way back, you will pass by the isolated San Pedrillo beach for a traditional lunch and some relaxed beach time. It is common to spot and even interact with some of the little capuchin monkeys, who can be quite entertaining and mischievous. Then you’ll head back to the mainland, trying to spot some dolphins jumping around and following the boat along the way, before arriving at the Ganadito Beach shore or the tour office in Sierpe.
