This secluded camping spot is located next to a small local restaurant in the Bajos del Toro region right next to the Juan Castro Blanco National Park. This is a great place to stop if you’re traveling between the Caribbean coast and La Fortuna, or if you’re looking for a private intermediate hiking trail through the jungle that ends in spectacular waterfall views.

The camping spot used to be a cattle farm and has been since turned into a tiny restaurant that uses a wood stove for cooking. There is a private open space by the restaurant where you can set up camp, and you’re likely to have the whole place to yourself, especially on weekdays. You can use the restaurant area for shelter in the case of rain, and have full access to bathrooms and showers.

From the campsite, you will have direct access to an isolated hiking trail along the Toro River canyon. The owners have put a lot of time into building the trail into the steep canyon, so plan to bring good hiking shoes because steep slopes and slick conditions are to be expected. There are a total of 8 different waterfalls along the hike and a freshwater pool for swimming at the end.

After your hike you have the option to eat at the restaurant, which is open for breakfast and lunch and specializes in traditional Costa Rican dishes such as the Casado. There is also a small pond on the property where you can spot frogs at night.

The access to this region Bajos del Toro from the Central Valley/Alajuela is very steep and windy, so make sure you are prepared for high-intensity driving conditions. Otherwise it’s a beautiful scenic route, and if you take the Vara Blanca route then you will pass by the La Paz Waterfall, which is a quick stop off the side of the road perfect for a classic waterfall photo.
