On the banks of the Reventazón River in Orosí de Paraíso, Cartago, with Tapantí National Park as its backdrop, Hacienda Ganadera Tapantí is a working cattle ranch that welcomes visitors about 45 minutes from San José. The camping area sits right beside the river, with several covered ranchos equipped with a grill, tables, water and electricity.
A small bridge crosses over to the covered spots, with alternate access for heavier vehicles. Nights are calm and the property is very well kept. Bathrooms are flush toilets and the showers are clean, adding comfort to what is otherwise a fully rural experience.
The cool mountain climate brings a constant chorus of howler monkeys, birds and insects at dawn, and a barn-style restaurant serves home-style criollo food. It can fill up on weekends, so it’s recommended to coordinate the visit in advance during high season.
