This rural hilltop campsite is about 45 minutes inland of Puntarenas and is the perfect hidden gem known for its spectacular views of the Nicoya Peninsula. It is a great place to stop by if you are on the way to Guanacaste from the Central Valley on highway 1, or if you are planning to board the morning ferry from Puntarenas to the Southern Nicoya Peninsula region.
The campsite consists of a large open grassy area along a ledge that looks out at the Central Pacific Coast for phenomenal sunset views. You’ll have access to a fire pit, electricity and a small pool during your stay, and the hilltop location allows for a nice fresh breeze for cool night of camping.
Besides hanging out and enjoying the views on the campsite, you can also visit the nearby town of Tajo Alto, which is an authentic town with friendly “ticos” who can point you to nearby hidden waterfalls such as “Catarata de la Mina // Mine Waterfall”, which is about 10 minutes north of the town up the Velásquez road (10°09’30.0″N 84°43’16.3″W). This is also a great area where you can visit some authentic restaurants, such as “Restaurant Dylan”, which serves delicious typical Costa Rican dishes including ceviche and handmade tortillas.
