This privately owned nature reserve is located in the cloud forest of the Talamanca mountains, right by the entrance to the famous Chirripó National Park, which is home to Costa Rica’s highest peak at 3,821 meters. The reserve is dedicated to the conservation of the cloud forest, and consists of 255 ha of reforested land and 28 ha of primary forest. It is definitely worth the visit if you want to get away from the crowds and explore the wonders of this high-altitude, tropical ecosystem.
The reserve has access to a variety of well maintained trails of easy, moderate, and difficult intensities ranging from 200m to 8km in distance, so you can choose which trails best suits you and your fitness level. These magical trails lead through the secondary and primary cloud forests, giving the chance to see an enormous diversity of tropical trees, birds, insects and other flora and fauna. It’s best to arrive early so you can get a chance to fully explore the property for its stunning waterfalls, towering old-growth trees, and unparalleled mountain views.
You have the option to hike the trails on your own ($10/person), or they also offer a variety of guided tours through the cloud forest, including night hikes and bird watching tours ($40-$50/person). They also have several cabins on the property in the case that you’d like to spend the night in a private and charming casita tucked within the mountains.
The Cloudbridge Nature Reserve is supported by the Cloud Forest Conservation Alliance, which aims to support reforestation efforts of the cloud forest and promote environmental education and research. They host volunteers, students, and scientists who are passionate about learning from and protecting this valuable ecosystem. By visiting this park, you will be contributing to an important mission to promote education, conservation and sustainability.
The road to arrive is very steep and narrow, so you must have a 4×4 to arrive. To avoid the road, you can park in the town of San Gerardo de Rivas and walk up, which is approximately a 30-45 minute walk. Make sure you have warm clothes for the chilly weather and good shoes for hiking in slick/muddy conditions.
