This beautiful, private camping spot is located about 2 hours north of the SJO airport and tucked within the central volcanic range of Costa Rica. It is highly recommended for those who want to get away from the crowds and feel completely isolated in the forest with spectacular views of a volcanic crater lagoon.
The campsite is located on the edge of an extinct volcanic crater, which has since become a small lagoon known as “Laguna Hule”. You’ll be on a nice grassy area with a direct view of the lagoon and access to toilets and showers. There is a restaurant and picnic area on the property that is available for clients during the day, but after it closes you’ll be completely isolated in the volcanic jungle.
From the campsite, you’ll have direct hiking access to Laguna Hule and two other lagoons in the area, called “Laguna Bosque Alegre” and “Laguna del Congo”. The trail to the first lagoon is only about a 30 minute walk, and you can coordinate with the owners to go kayaking if you’re interested. After your hike, you can visit the local restaurant for a typical, homemade Costa Rican dish.
This campsite is located about 15 minutes driving from Rio Cuarto, which is a small, local town where you can stock up on groceries and grab a bite at the authentic restaurants known as “sodas”. There are also several waterfalls and hikes nearby, such as the “Toro Waterfall”, and you can visit “Recreo Verde” or “Termales del Bosque” to enjoy some nice hot springs away from the crowds.
There are two routes to access the campsite: the northern route from Rio Quarto is a really rough and muddy, so a good 4×4 is required; the route from the south is about 7km along a gravel road with much better conditions.
